More about the Australian Open

It was a long road from the Open’s humble beginnings to its spot among the tennis world’s top four events, the Grand Slam tennis tournaments. In addition to the Australian Open, there is the French Open, Wimbledon, and the U.S. OpenWimbledon is played on grass; the French Open on clay and the Australian and U.S. opens on hard courts. Australia differs from all others with its state-of-the-art facilities that feature indoor play. Courts have retractable roofs that can be easily closed in case of rain or sweltering summer temperatures.

In the beginning, few competitors came because of Australia’s remoteness and lack of transportation inside the country. It drew its first foreign competitors, U.S. Davis Cup players, in 1946. But, Australia came a long way in a short time. By the 1960s, it dominated the tennis world and has since produced many of the sport’s top players.

The Australian Open, played on grass until switching to hard courts in 1988, had been rotated between Australian and New Zealand cities before being given its permanent home in Melbourne in 1972.

Things to do and see in Melbourne during the Australian Open

There’s plenty to see and do in Melbourne when not watching tennis. Surprising to many, Australia is almost as big as the United States and traveling from the east coast to the west is like traveling from New York to Los Angeles. If you would like to travel to other cities like Sydney or Perth, Paramount Business Jets can arrange a flight for you.

In Melbourne, you can:

  • Get your bearings and plot your stay from the Eureka Skydeck, a viewing platform on Riverside Quay. If you dare, step into “The Edge,” a glass box jutting from the side of the building.
  • Visit the Shrine of Remembrance in Kings Domain Parkland. Another place with great views, this war memorial sits atop a hill a short walk from the city’s free tram service.
  • Check out the interesting architecture of Melbourne’s past on Flinders and Swanson streets, including the Gothic St. Paul’s Cathedral and the historic Flinder’s Street Station.
  • Take a drive or a tour bus an hour east to the Dandenong Mountain Range with its towering mountain ashes and charming little villages where you can get homemade food and hand-crafted souvenirs.
  • Take a scenic drive along the Great Ocean Road. An hour southwest of Melbourne. The 150-mile road along the Victorian Coast has views you shouldn’t leave Australia without seeing.
